Which Roth IRA??

February 19th, 2008 at 02:28 pm

Do you guys have experience with Roth IRA? How do I compare which one is better? Does anybody know of a Roth IRA that do not have minimum requirement and few fees? What should I be looking into to decide on who to go with? Thanks.

Well, I have a Roth IRA with T. Rowe Price because their min was an auto contribution of $50 per month. I needed a way to start and that gave it to me. If you don't have $4k in your account at the end of a year, they do charge a $10 fee but I can't imagine anyone having to pay that more than once so long as you gradually up your contribution amount. You can add more money to the account anytime you want but I am pretty sure that is standard for all the main companies. I know Vanguard is well loved but their min was too high for me to start with. I am sure someone else will chime in shortly to explain their min requirements and fees.

I have heard Vanguard is good also. Don't know all the details. I am going to call about that today. I'll let you know what I find out.

I would go with Vanguard. Are you eligible for membership with USAA? They have good options as well. T. Rowe Price and Fidelity are popular as well.

An IRA is just a tax shelter, and Roths in particular only specifies that the money will be taxed one time, when you contribute.

However, that doesn't dictate what kind of investments and requirements it has. That part is up to the brokerage of your choice, and to a lesser extent, what kind of investments you have in mind.

T.Rowe Price is is indeed a good place to go to that has very low requirements. I personally like Vanguard as well, but they have a 3k minimum (1k for STAR). Fidelity might be even higher still, but also a good brokerage.

Whatever it is, I recommend sticking with a reputable brokerage. I would also figure out what kind of investment investment vehicles you would like to use for your Roth, as that will also determine where to go, and who has the best deals....
